Phil Bradley hits the nail on the head.

Librarians are there to make money too.

Otherwise they’d just be library volunteers.

Richard 06.28.11 at 8:52 pm

Librarians don’t go into the profession for the money any more than ministers do, Joseph. You can trust me on this.

Joseph W 06.28.11 at 9:18 pm

Fair cop.

Pam 06.28.11 at 11:20 pm

I agree with Richard’s first sentence.
Librarians can be cranky people, just like everyone else, and overdue library books can be investigated with ferocity!
But Ben Myers got it right with his posting some time ago about librarians - we have our treasures and guard them with our lives.

And coffee. Librarians should ensure that their premises provide coffee - good coffee. Otherwise they are just a tease (like a baseball stadium that doesn’t serve hotdogs). Five stars for Swansea University library: Costa (to the delight of Italian students I know; none of that Starbucks piddle).

Richard 06.29.11 at 8:56 am

Availability of coffee is context-dependent of course: the current Mrs Hall would probably not want it in her school library :)

Pam 06.29.11 at 9:25 am

Coffee would not be suitable for a school library, that’s true - although I have come across plenty of half-empty flavoured milk poppers tossed into waste-paper baskets.
I think Kim doesn’t take into account the meagre budgets doled out to (especially school) libraries - coffee would be a big luxury!
Love to have a coffee with you one day Kim (and Richard). :)

btw, let’s go, Bernie, let’s go. A-Tomic to win Wimbledon.

Mendip Nomad 06.29.11 at 10:20 am

As the son of a former librarian I concur completely with both the article and Richard’s comment re: money.

And Pam, sorry, but as well as Tomic is playing I just can’t see the semi’s being played by anyone but the top 4 seeds, who are rightly the top 4 in the world and all of whom are in superb form. One of them will win this year, but I’m sure Tomic will get his chance at some point in the future!

The Americans now suck at tennis. And golf. Even boxing. According to an article in Saturday’s Independent, it’s all about team sport now. The Marlboro Man is dead.

Mendip Nomad 06.29.11 at 2:05 pm

Never mind, Kim, you still lead the world at American Football, Baseball and Basketball - though, mind you, you are just about the only country in the world that plays them professionally ;)

Kim 06.29.11 at 4:14 pm

Yeah, and where would MLB be without the Latin Americans? And who inspired the Dallas Mavericks to the NBA title this year? The German Dirk Nowitzski. That leaves the NFL. Obviously we excel with the pigskin: war is simply the continuation of football by other means.

Mind, the English can’t play tennis or golf, and they can’t box either. Most hilarious of all, they even suck at soccer. Barcelona gave Manchester United a lesson in the “beautiful game”, now didn’t they? It was men against toddlers on walking frames. Indeed, domestically, the English have turned soccer into a quite ugly spectacle. As a matter of fact, the only sport the English are good at is — er, there isn’t one! Cricket perhaps. If you like slow motion. Man, I’m glad I’m not English!

Mendip Nomad 06.29.11 at 4:54 pm

I can’t talk, when it comes to sport I tend towards the Scottish part of my ancestry - and we suck even more than the English at everything (apart from maybe Curling! Oh, and tennis of course - how daft is that, that a Scot is better at tennis than any Englishman in at least a quarter, if not half, a century?!) And as a cricket fan, I have to say England are generally pretty good nowadays, but India’s arrival shortly will make clear where exactly they stand in the grand scheme of things.

Richard 06.29.11 at 6:38 pm

You remember the Monty Python alien blancmange invasion? They turned everyone into scots, just so they could win at Wimbledon…

Pam 06.29.11 at 11:47 pm

Tomic went down fighting. Now I’m barracking for Tsonga - I like his cheeky dance.

Kim 06.30.11 at 6:33 am

You can barrack for me in your prayers any time you want, Pam!

Pam 06.30.11 at 9:17 am

My privilege, Kim.

Richard - #6 “the current Mrs Hall” ????

Richard 07.05.11 at 10:29 pm

Just a little jest, Bob. You haven’t got a ‘pastoral situation’ on your hands. ;)
