I just picked this up in Saturday’s edition of The Independent

Another word that should always ring the alarm is “plethora” - it is often misused. It means a harmful excess of something that, in due measure, would be harmless or beneficial. To say that a certain amount or number of something constitutes a plethora implies that there is a smaller quantity that would have been just right.

So now you know.
