Prayer of the week

by Kim on July 13, 2012

“Loving God, we are so filled with hope by the Wimbledon final today! Guide Andy Murray in the choices that come to him with every ball. Make us all the best that we can be, by your Holy Spirit, through Jesus Christ, to the glory of God the Father. Amen.”

– The Archbishop of York, John Sentamu

Dumb, or what? I mean praying such a prayer to Murray’s actual opponent. See David Foster Wallace’s wonderful essay “Federer as Religious Experience”.

If anyone saw the Archbishop of Canterbury having a quiet word with the Archbishop of York during the General Synod this week, he was advising his junior colleague to take a vow of silence during the Olympics.

You’re making that up!

Aren’t you?

If only. The Archbishop posted it on his website, and it was published in the Sun. Honest. (Heads-up from Andrew Brown writing in today’s Church Times.)

I used to think John Sentamu was one of the good guys. Not so sure, now - of course, as a Brit I backed Andy Murray, but praying for him to win? Why would God be interested in Wimbledon? Sorry, but this is inane…
