Chapel & Tavern: an evening with The Carnival Band

by Richard on January 17, 2013

I hope I can be excused for promoting an event I’m putting on.
The Carnival Band
Chapel & Tavern is a concert split between 2 venues. The first half will be in Wrexham Methodist Church and will be focused on hymns - mostly Wesley’s. For the 2nd half, we’ll go down to the Saith Seren pub. The aim is to show the links between what we’ve come to think of as ‘traditional hymns’ and the drinking songs of the tavern. Though we think of these as different musical worlds, in Wesley’s time it would often be the same musicians accompanying drinkers in the inn who made up the ‘west gallery band’ of the local church. (No organs then, of course). It should be a really good night. The Carnival Band have been described as Henry VIII’s rock & rollers - there’s an exhuberance to their music which is irresistible. They’ll be joined on the night by Vivien Ellis.

Tickets are available online and if my friends here use the code connexions2013, there’ll be a nice discount from the ticket price

Looks really good - shame I’m so far away - even further, during that week, as I’m away with the family - Dammit!

Wish I could have been there!

We had them (with Maddy Prior) in Heptonstall as part of our Charles Wesley 300 celebrations. They were superb!
