Having trouble with my piles

by Richard on April 26, 2006

This cartoon by the always splendid Dave Walker seems curiously appropriate to my circumstances.

(And I apologize for the very poor taste of the headline. I’ll try not to let it happen again)

Some advice, Richard: the way to avoid huge piles is simply (as it were!) to shred the buggers while they are still small. No one on his death-bed has ever been known to have said, “I wish I had spent more time with paperwork.”

Thinking about the combination of piles and shredders made me feel quite ill.

I am certain that there is a section of society who are worried that on their death-bed they will think “I wish I can given ministers more paperwork”, the problem is they seem determined to be ready for that death-bed in plenty of time.

Actually, the solution to large piles is to have lots and lots of small piles that you promise yourself you will eventually go through or file. Those drawings look all too familiar; as though the artist was standing in my office when he made the sketches.

One of my previous Ministers had a wonderful idea to avoid piles of paperwork on her desk. She immediately offloaded it into the pigeon-holes in the church vestibule (next door to the Manse). Every Sunday our pigeon-holes were all bulging with papers and the frequent cry was heard, Why have I got this?’ What a relief (from papers) when she moved on!

Olive - sorry to hear about your ulcers. Hope they’re better soon. Your minister had the right idea!
Ivan - your office was a paragon of tidiness!

Thou didst not see my office a few weeks ago, but it is much better now - I have hidden most of the small piles!

What worries me, Olive, is what happened to all the paperwork that no longer appeared in your church piegon holes - did your new minister simply drown in it?
