It has always been difficult to take the Eurovision Song Contest seriously, but this year it reached new heights of lunacy. The voting followed the usual pattern with very few surprises. Britain’s entry was pretty poor (and ever-so-slightly dodgy, I thought). The French, as Terry Wogan noted in his commentary, seemed to have entered the sme song that they always do.
But the winners? Gloriously over-the-top , rockers in “Lord of the Rings” outfits, Finnish band Lordi, and the splendidly titled Hard Rock Hallelujah. Plain bonkers, but huge fun.

I thought it was by far one of the best Eurovisions of recent times. There were several songs that were real great Eurovision songs.

I am a fan of Lordi who live in england where they have not toured in a while….and to see them perform as they did makes me want them to come to england more and more now…its about time someone with talent and something different comes in to the Eurovision…it was a superb show with Lithuania just making fools out of themselves !

That’s what i said, malc. Aren’t ‘great Eurovision songs’ and ‘daft’ practically synonymous?
I couldn’t swear that I remember the Lithuanian entry, Sean. Was that the one with the bald bloke who did the strange dance?

Nope, Richard. The Lithuanian entry was that desperate “We are the winners.. of Eurovision” number.
I am a foreigner living in Finland. I am thrilled to bits for Lordi and the Finns. I laughed like most others when Lordi got 42% of the national vote here in Finland. But hey.. all of us love em now!
Welcome to Helsinki 2007!

Ah! ‘We are the winners’. Truly desperate.
