Dog the Bounty Hunter arrested

by Richard on September 16, 2006

I doubt this will be a big story in Britain — I’m the only person I know here who admits to watching Dog the Bounter Hunter when he gets chance — but as I was very surprised to learn from Randy that Duane “Dog” Chapman has been arrested, apparently wanted by the Mexican authorities for kidnapping.

The case arises from his capture in 2003 of the Max Factor heir Andrew Luster who had fled to Mexico from multiple accusations of rape. (Luster is currently serving a 124 year sentence for the offences). However, the Mexican authorities took ill to Chapman’s intervention and arrested him for the crime of kidnapping. Although he was released from jail and allowed to return to the USA after only a few days, it is these charges which have re-emerged and for which Dog faces extradition to Mexico. Dog’s son Leland and associate Tim have also been arrested.

Update: Dog gets bail. This story is getting no coverage in the B ritish media that I’ve seen. I be lost without my friend Randy!

Saw a discussion of it last night on a US blog, many posters seemed to feel Dog shouldn’t have been charged.

That would be a reasonable assume to make in most US states which permit bounty hunters.

However, Mexico is a soveign nation, and Chapman could have turned Luster over to Mexican authorities and obeyed their law.

I wonder if A&E is going to keep their contract or drop the show?

I do find the whole bail bond/bounty hunter thing a bit mystifying. Even if A&E drop the show, I hope that we’ll get to see season 4 over here.

This article from the BBC, obviously written before Dog became a tv star is a helpful explanation of the way bounty hunting works.

It’ll be interesting to see how this plays out. I thought that when an individual took out a bail bond, they consented to the actions a bounty hunter would have to take to capture them. Has this ever been addressed on the show?

signed, a victim 09.19.06 at 9:51 pm

I cannot believe that they are doing this to Dog. It’s just wrong. He’s just doing his job in taking a rapist off the streets. I’m glad he’s there making justice happen.

Signed a victim… Believe it. Not in another country. A bounty hunter can’t ignore other countries laws. You can’t come to Britian and break their laws, likewise a US bounty hunter has to obey them the same as you do.

And when a US bounty hunter breaks another countries laws, the US will extraidite.

A&E filmed the whole thing…of course, it’s an enonomic win-win for A&E, Mexican authorities, and the Chapmans.

i am proud that dog did his job..something no one else cares about doing is taking raptist and drug dealer’s off our streets.why did they let this go for 3 years and then arrest them?? well that is mexico!! they send there folks here without green cards to take our jobs.. but when we do what is right they want to put us under the jail!! good job dog keep it up!!

Princesslita:

A&E wasted no time, in less that a week they have an emotional special on TV. It’s the same tactic used when Chapman broke the law in 2003.

Chapman and his crew went on TV vowing to get Luster (and therefore 100 thousand of the 1 million bail) got a tip, went to Mexico and the rest is history.

The US viewing public are being played for suckers.
And let’s be real here, the US viewing public is overwhelming on Chapmans side and the law be damned. He is colourful and charismatic, and that overrules US law and international law?
A&E is providing you with the ‘redemption reality show’ with Dog and now the , ‘our star is being persecuted for doing the right thing’ routine.

The US justice department extraites all US bounty hunters that break the law, in the case of Mexico, the extrication time is 3 years.

Chapman figured he could just stay away from Mexico and not deal with legalities. Chapman and his team were foreigners in Mexico, they cannot assume the function of law officials.

Yell about how your US marshalls behaved, they just did their job on your soil.
Yell about how bad your federal prisons are are on your soil.
Yell aout your Justice Department enforcing Supreme Court law.

The US Supreme Court has made it very clear, a US bounty hunter may not pursue anyone across international borders, and that their powers of arrest can only be exercised within the territory of the United States.

US bounty hunters that come to Canada, and head back to the US to collect their fee and deliver their jumper are extradited by the US Justice Department and charged with kidnapping under Canadian law. Same with Europe, UK or even Afghanistan.

Bounty hunters are also not welcome in some US states, and have done and will do prison time for breaking state or federal laws.

I think it’s totally ridiculous that is happening to the Chapman family. This should not even be happening. We have Mexico’s citizens in our country illegally committing murders and our government doesn’t extradite them back to their own country or insure that they don’t come back. Keep up the good work Dog and family. We’re all behind you!

walt 09.20.06 at 3:43 pm

all i can say is who’s gonna let the dog out?

13

Beth 09.20.06 at 6:06 pm

Rita, two wrongs don’t make a right, if you’ll excuse the hackneyed old saying. Even if it’s true that the US government is failling to deal with foreign criminals within its borders, that doesn’t mean that there sould be a free-for-all for US citizens who break the law elsewhere.

N.B. I love the idea of “illegally committing murders”… very American ;)

Dog, Leyland and Tim are doing something most people would shy away from. They do it for a reason. I would hope that if I am ever in that situation (even though in UK) they would be the ones to catch me, they have hearts, and, unlike most bounty hunters in the US, do not carry guns, they understand why people commit crimes and try to help them. To lock these people up would be a crime, as one previous poster said, if it were you or me this wouldn’t be an issue, lets face it this is a means to an appeal for a rapist.

Im so glad he got that freak off the streets i know he should of did it differently but im sure there is alot of people that can rest easier knowing Luster is behind bars its truly unfair how they are treating dog in my books hes a REAL hero!!!

I can’t believe how many people on this message board has fooled themselves into thinking Dog deserves what he got. He caught a violent serial rapest that druged, video taped, raped and tortured several woman. The us marshalss, FBI, or any other governmental agency failed to do anything about Luster crossing the border. When Luster was found in Mexico he had video equipment and a journal that said “paybacks” and under that section it had the names of the girls that testified against him.

Dog absolutly did NOT catch Luster for the money(he never got paid) he caught him because he knows that Luster was a menice to society, it did not matter if he was here in the U.S. or Mexico. Dog did not want him to hurt anymore woman.

And to the jerk who posted that has arrest was good because he is a freak, well i only wish one day you can personally feel the pain that the 3 woman felt after they were raped. Just because Dog is loud, that is not a reason to lock him up. He has 12 children and he is taking care of one of his daughters child after she passed away.
And he loves talking to kids. I went to Hawaii last summer & i went to his office, he was not there but Wesley was and he called Dog and he got on the phone just to talk to my daughter. Then my bother, who is in the national guard, asked Dog to come to his unit, & he did. He went to the guard unit, hung out, talked, and took pics. He is very thoughtful, and willing to help anybody who is knocked down.

There are so many stupid laws on the books, they should be taken off Example: somewhere on the east cost there is a law that says you can not whale watch while driving your car on the highway! Dog not only did the government a favor, he did a favor for all mankind! And Dog did turn over Luster to the Mexican authorites.

Plus what is this saying to criminals? Go to Mexico, they will hide you? Mexico is a corrupt, sleezy, and greedy county. If dog is sent to hail, the community will surely suffer!

Dog, Tim, Leland- I am praying for you and your families to be able to get through this and I am praying that justice will prevail!!

Well as much as I like the DOG and his show and all he does for humanity, there still lies one major problem surrounding this whole thing… He of all people (a distinguished Bounty Hunter) should of understood that he broke the law. Mexico’s laws or otherwise, he posted bail and skipped out on his court date. That is a serious foul in my oppinion. How many times have we heard him say you are not taking food off of my childrens table by skipping out on your bail. What about the person that posted his bail?

All in all he is a blessing from God to all those Criminals who he captures. He is not just in it for the money, he is actually trying to change the way those people think about themselves and what they are doing. He probably make 100 times more of a difference in that one hour car ride to jail than most of the criminals 12 or 24 month sentences.

Moral of the story is he should of showed up for court after all it was just a misdemenor right. All he would of gotten is a small fine and he would have been done with it. My hart goes out to him and his family none the less.

i think that the bounty hunter should be here in england as we have alot of drugs over here as well as other people commiting offences i have 4 boys myself and do worry if they are gonna get the drugs pushed onto them. They should release the dog and his brothers as they do good in the comunity and it will also release the pressure on beth

25

Tracey Jones 10.13.06 at 6:22 pm

I watch Dog the Bounty Hunter all the time and am not affraid to admit it. Dog and his posse should never have been arrested. They have taken a very dangerous man off the streets. They were only doing what the American police couldnt do. The American police should be footing his legal bill. Good luck to the Dog and his family

NightHunter 10.21.06 at 4:02 pm

Duane, Leland and Tim Chapman should not be extradited to Mexico for the act of taking a serial rapist off of their streets, who never should have been there to begin with.

The real criminal subject in this case, pervert rapist and necrophiliac Andrew Luster, is currently serving a 124 year sentence for his atrocities. Thanks to the Chapman’s, he is where he can never drug and rape another innocent victim. A post arrest search of his Mexico hotel room found a video camera, rape kit and quantities of GHB.

Maybe he just went to Mexico to work on his tan?

Dog was in constant communication with US and Mexican authorites, and even had a paid Mexican cop with him when he nabbed Luster. But the cop booked it as soon as the tacos hit the fan. How typical!

Mexico won’t extradite rapists, drug lords and cop killers to the US, so I don’t see why they deserve special treatment for a petty misdemeanor such as “Deprivation of Liberty.”

If Mexico wishes to have their tourist trade boycotted by going after American heroes, that’s fine for them then. But America has always stood for truth and justice, and must continue to do so. Abandoning these men to be extradited to what is surely their untimely, horrific deaths in a foreign prison is not in the interests of either of those things, neither is violating their constitutional rights!

If this is permitted to happen, ANY of us could be next!

FREE THE DOG!!

Isn’t life just like this all over!
People get away with murder every day but one man gives his life literally for that of many others and they want to put him in jail in Mexico??!!
Oh get a move on US envoys and sort this traversty of justice out!

We found Dog by chance whilst spending some time in the Southland of America last year. Became hooked and were delighted to find it in England. The Chapman family come over as really good, sincere people and we wish them all the best. It seems a long time since any comments appeared on this site, so does anyone knowthe latest news please?

I have watched the dog and his family for the past 2 years he and his family are great people of our society today. I wish we had people like him and his family in the uk. I think it is wrong what the mexicon law are doing to these wonderful people. they were only doing their job by keeping our streets safe.

This is the latest that I’m aware of: Utah Attorney General takes the case

Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff has taken on the cause of “Dog the Bounty Hunter” reports the Salt Lake Tribune

Shurtleff says he is trying to use connections he has forged over the years with top levels of the Mexican government and its various attorneys general to get extradition proceedings dropped against Duane Chapman, the bail bondsman in Hawaii who has become famous through the reality show “Dog the Bounty Hunter” on A&E.

These things take a long time, don’t they?

I am a big fan of Dog and find it amazing this has happened to a man who has done nothing but good.
