Amazing grace - again

by Richard on February 26, 2007

Following on from Sunday’s post, I defy anyone to find a better rendering of Amazing Grace than this fine offering from the Blind Boys of Alabama. Even though they sing that verse Newton didn’t write. Brilliant.

Thanks Richard for the post. I totally love the “Blind Boys”. I always get teary-eyed when I hear these guys sing. Wow!!! love it. :)

As teenagers, we used to love hauling out our guitars and singing Amazing Grace to the “House of the Rising Sun” tune. Back in the early 70’s, it made us feel gritty cutting-edge type Christian young people. ;)

My dad spent 30 plus years in prison ministry and the HOTRS version of Amazing Grace always got the inmates singing “lustily and with good courage” in chapel.

As to the Blind Boys, have you heard their rendition of “Nothing but the blood” with Jars of Clay? That has become a favourite of mine.

I haven’t heard that, Ian. I’ll have a search…

I reckon the Amazing Grace and HotRS are the perfect combination - something about the mournfulness of the tune and the hopefulness of the words.

I’m wondering though. Are you now a gritty, cutting edge type Christian old person? ;)
