Mike’s memorial service

by Richard on March 1, 2007

The service for Mike Blakey was held on Tuesday evening at Sketty Methodist Church. About 150 people attended. There were contributions from a variety of Mike’s friends. His mother Mary read a poem and a former university tutor spoke of his admiration of Mike both as a student and a man. It was an emotionally-charged evening as you can imagine, but I think we managed to strike the right note of celebration. Does “sober joy” make sense? Wood spoke with obviously heartfelt passion and all those who took part helped to create a service that was a fitting tribute to Mike. The collection at the service gathered about £500 towards the Michael Blakey Memorial Fund.
