Hymn of the day

by Richard on March 18, 2007

Hark my soul! It is the Lord,
‘Tis thy Saviour, hear his word;
Jesus speaks, and speaks to thee,
“Say, poor sinner, lov’st thou me?

“I delivered thee when bound,
And, when bleeding, healed thy wound;
Sought thee wandering, set thee right,
Turned thy darkness into light.

“Can a woman’s tender care
Cease toward the child she bare?
Yes, she may forgetful be,
Yet will I remember thee.

“Mine is an unchanging love;
Higher than the heights above,
Deeper than the depths beneath,
Free and faithful, strong as death.

“Thou shalt see my glory soon,
When the work of grace is done;
Partner of my throne shalt be,–
Say, poor sinner, lov’st thou me?”

Lord, it is my chief complaint
That my love is weak and faint;
Yet I love thee and adore;
Oh, for grace to love thee more!

William Cowper

Thank you , Richard! I was praying hard this Mother’s Day/Mothering Sunday for a young man being destroyed by his family’s rejection and, in particular, longing for his Mother’s love. She signed over his legal guardianship from the age of 8 until he was 18. Then he went North in the hope of living with her, but the love was not there and he sought solace in drugs and alcohol. Back here among Christian friends, he was making good progress with his recovery and his Christian faith, but as Mother’s Day approached he could bear it no more and once more took refuge in cannabis. Then realising that he had, as he told me on his mobile, ‘let you down’ he fled far away from here. Yesterday i managed to get him on his mobile phone and he asked me to write letters to him. So I was praying for help in doing this - to give him hope and encouragement without being too condemnatory and adding to his sadness. William Cowper came to my rescue! He says much more powerfully what I have been saying in these last few months. Thank you again - and please pray for us, Richard.

William Cowper would know. He had problems that your young man has. God be with you and with him.

Blessings,

Eugene
