Bring out your dead

Faith and Theology wants your nominations for the worst theological inventions. Front runners so far appear to the Rapture, double predestination, and scriptural infallibility.

So no cause for controversy, then.

I didn’t realize that rapture and scriptural infallibility WERE theological “inventions”. Even predestination isn’t an invention. However, I would look at double predestination as EXTREME predestination as opposed to a “theolgical invention”. If making something that is “legitimate” “extreme” is a “theological invention” then so be it. I would say that my observation of what an invention is doesn’t include an extreme version. That is if my understanding of what the logical analogies are for the proper definitions of the terms therein. I thought the reference to “inventions” was rather humorous apart from my observation as actually being inaccurate. At least I have a sense of humor. :)

how about having to sign a doctrinal basis before being accepted into a group??

Up until a few years ago I would probably say verbal inerrancy, but now I think the rapture (at least as understood in the “Left Behind” camp) has streaked ahead of the competition. The fundies are even fudging vi now just to hold on to the rapture. It’s mind-boggling.

Well, given the current brou-ha-has I have to say penal substitutionary atonement.

Also male headship.

And the general tendency to equte sinfulness with sexual desire such that we enter a world where everyone’s urge to sin is viewed as being as uncontrollable as a 16 year-old boy’s genitalia.

Wow, people are calling many legitimate things that are actually IN the Bible as being “inventions”. The Bible mentions Jesus as being the “propitiation”, “perfect Sacrifice”, “Lamb that was slain”, “Lamb to the slaughter”, “Lamb of God who takes away (makes a way by Faith in Him) the sins of the world”, “Without the shedding of blood there can be no ‘removal’ of sins” and all of talk by the Apostle Paul of our sins being placed on the cross and entered into by Faith in Him. I just don’t understand how “penal substitiution” is included in this when it so incredibly clear from God’s Word.

“sinfullness”? Well Paul talks about the “sin nature”, “lust of the flesh”, etc. It seems to me we ALL are born with a sin nature and that by Faith in Christ “Confess with your mouth the LJ and believe in your heart that God is risen from the dead” we are cleansed of our our sin. There is a difference between temptation and actually acting upon that temptation. Sexual desire isn’t wrong unless it becomes lust at which point it actually IS sin. “It has been told of you not to commit adultry. I tell you if you look at a woman with lust on your heart for her you have commited adultry.” This implies it IS controlable. Pam, maybe we agree on this one but it appears from the way it was written it was a little ambiguos.
