Rising to Dawkins’ bait

by Richard on September 19, 2007

In the letters column of my newspaper the other day, Richard Dawkins wrote:

Would you need to read learned volumes on leprechology before disbelieving in leprechauns?

Two responses appeared today, both from Swansea, one from yours truly.

Bravo, Richard! Having had my own tussle with Andrew Harrison of The Word magazine a couple of months ago, I salute your engagement with Dawkins’ bigotry.

Well written, Richard. I find Dawkins to be insufferably arrogant as if he had the only brain in the world.

Richard, While I don’t consider myself a fundamentalist, I really do like McDonald’s and it is a wonderful gastronomical experience. :)

Great response, Richard. It’s becoming increasingly clear that Dawkins is not a person that can be taken seriously.

Thanks Joe. For the record, I do think Dawkins deserves to be taken seriously. His record in genetics is world-class and he has more than a little talent as a writer. But when he writes about religion, he writes from ignorance and prejudice. Which is, ironically, the same place from which some Christians write about science.

Richard,

Wonderful! It continues to surprise me just how ignorant many academics are of theological scholarship. It’s almost as if Dawkins has never heard of Karl Barth or (in his own country) Rowan Williams. In fact, it seems that theology for him is equal to the Purpose-Driven Life or something on that level.

That is a great repsonse by you. I actually know some people who believe in Leprechauns (and I am not writing this tongue in cheek at all) and I would never not believe in anything just because science, in its very blinkered view of the universe, can not prove its existence. Dawkins really does not have a grip on the subject he continues to try and ridicule.

While I agree with the response to Dawkins in every way. I don’t understand what is wrong with “Purpose Driven Life”, being against Karl Barth and Rowan Williams, etc. While I’m not a fundamentalist, I do believe there is value, truthfulness and consistency for believing exactly what God’s Word says as opposed to having projection outside of that consistency.

With regard to Christian science I know many who are actual PHd’s that happen to be Creationist and for science to outright reject them without really looking at the evidence or look at it in a biased way from these particular scientists due to ones own prejudice, predisposition, etc. seems disingenuous to Christian academia.

Many of these PHd Creationist are former Evolutionist’s, atheist’s, etc. and have come to their own conclusion from a scientific perspective as opposed to the accusation that it originated from a theological perspective first. It would be great if scientists looked at the broad base of knowledge as opposed to reviewing what people like Dawkins says or anything remotely close to what Dawkins says before anything else scientific.

I read your published letter in response to Dawkins’, and wholeheartedly agree. I think that irrespective of ones personal theological beliefs Dawkins needs to be challenged and challenged very seriously.

As a Prof. of the “Public Understanding of Science” he not only frequently presents unsound arguments, he is actually misrepresenting science.

By applying the term “scientific” to his arguments, he implies a certain credibility that in actuality is unwarranted.

My own irritation over these matters has led me to devote some time to a new blog:

http://dawkinswatch.blogspot.com/

I will strive to not personally debate too much in this blog, but rather catalog and discuss what I see as serious weaknesses in his arguments on a range of topics.

I have not placed any restriction on who may comment either.

So, well done and do keep up the letter writing!
