I have been saying that for years particularly as it is quite obvious United Kingdom are never going to win due to the political voting. I watched about three minutes last night and Belarus were voting and surprise, surprise gave all their votes to other former Russian States - what a load of absolute tosh. The other thing that gets me is that we are one of the biggest contributors financially - not quite where I would like to see my licence money go.

I agree.
After watching euro vision last night and the voting I thought it was the biggest load of crap I have ever seen and next year we should just give it two fingers and let the east european countries have it.
Even Terry Wogan agrees is now time to call it a day

Although it wasn’t the best, I still love it. I wrote the inevitable review, of course.

I’m with Wood. Of course it’s bloody awful, from the presenters with their melt-in-your-mouth-but-cut-your-throat voices and quick-changes of suits and dresses that don’t even fit; to the music (sic), the lyrics and tunes of which monkeys could create as first drafts on their proverbial typewriters; to the ostentatious uber-acts and their taste-defying choreography; to the super-crass politicisation of the voting, replete with racist and homophobic subtexts. I mean you couldn’t make it up. That’s why it’s so brilliant. Alas, without the desert-dry wit of Wogan, it would be Hamlet without the Prince.

Wow Kim what a great way to say what Zaphod said in four words ‘biggest load of crap’! But seriously you are right about Eurovision without Wogan - his commentary is probably the highlight of this dire event and just about makes it watchable.

I’ve always enjoyed Eurovision, but this year even Terry Wogan’s commentary didn’t do it for me. Wood’s splendid review notwithstanding, there was no joy in it for me this year.
Kim - I know you’re more alert to this kind of thing than most of us, but any homophobic subtext to Eurovision has completely passed me by. You wouldn’t like to clarify?
Wood 05.26.08 at 9:45 am
Seriously, Kim, kind of wondering about where you get the homophobia from: Eurovision is one of the campest things on television.

Hi Wood,
I’m talking specifically about the voting in some countires. I trust Angie on this one, who teaches European languages, and tells me that the folk in some countries wouldn’t vote for an act simply on the basis of colour and sexual orientation.
Wood 05.26.08 at 11:13 am
I do believe that might be the case, but if that’s a major factor in the voting, how does one account for Marija Serifovic’s song that openly traded on lesbian imagery winning so decisively in 2007?
Apart from it being Serbian, of course.

Not to mention Dana International in (I think) 1998.
Wood 05.26.08 at 6:40 pm
1996, I thought, but yeah. Dana International.
Kim 05.27.08 at 8:25 am
Postmodern irony- they went for a freak.
Wood 05.27.08 at 8:48 am
Come on, Kim, me old china. You can’t have it both ways. You know full well that the countries who are most likely to be discriminatory are the ones who take the thing seriously.
FWIW, I am not post-modern about Eurovision - about five years ago I turned into the fictional but very true Dave Erdman ( http://www.theonion.com/content/node/38688 ).
Kim 05.27.08 at 9:05 am
I can try.
Wood 05.27.08 at 9:18 am
And you’re calling me post-modern! Hah! :p
Kim 05.27.08 at 9:54 am
No, no, no - I mean I can try to have it both ways! Doesn’t your wife? (Cue torrent of abuse from feminists.)
Wood 05.27.08 at 10:26 am
That’s what I meant, old chap!
Isn’t having it both ways the ultimate po-mo cop-out?
Kim 05.27.08 at 10:41 am
Chalcedon?
Wood 05.27.08 at 11:39 am
Or pre-modern.
Have it your way. Or both ways. Or how the fathers had it. Oh, I don’t know. I just think that Azerbaijan were robbed.
Kim 05.27.08 at 12:01 pm
No, game, set and match to Wood And you’ve got my vote to replace Wogan!
Richard 05.27.08 at 1:12 pm
And mine. Now *that* would be a good gig, Wood — though imagine having to sit through the semi-finals as well as the main event!
Kim 05.27.08 at 3:51 pm
Still, Moscow … Maybe you’ll run into a Gay Pride parade.
