Cartoon blogger silenced

by Richard on July 22, 2008

Our friend the amiable Cartoon Blogger (aka Dave Walker) has been received a “cease & desist” order from SSG, the (not very) charitable trust that took over the SPCK chain of bookstores. For some while Dave has been faithfully blogging this story, giving the perspective of those who have worked in the bookshops and providing a platform for their grievances. He has complied with the demand for the very good reasopn that he doesn’t have the resources to face a legal battle, and I don’t blame him for that. He has removed all of the “offending” material from his site.

There might be some who think that this is acceptable behaviour from an organisation that presents itself as Christian, but to me it looks like bullying and intimidation. Fortunately, you can still read what Dave has had to say…

Simply google the posts then read them from the cached versions. For example:
SSG files for bankruptcy
Charity Commission to investigate SSG
SPCK/SSg Bookshop news
SSG: Bankruptcy papers received, employees not paid
Former SPCK shops: Is SSG’s ‘bankruptcy’ legitimate?

I know it sometimes feels as if google is taking over the world, but here they’re doing us all a favour. Let’s see SSG’s lawyers trying to take on the big boys in Mountain View, California.

Not so tough now, I’ll bet.

Update: Even the post announcing the censorship has gone now. Nil desperandum, Dave. Nil desperandum.

A “cease and desist order” - a prize for pissing off those in authority - man, I wish I could get one of those. Congratulations, Dave!

This story might explain the sudden need to issue cease and desist order on sites that have been going for quite a while now!

We were in York last week, and found the ex-SPCK shop shuttered and locked, with a mound of unopened post behind th door. Tragic loss of an important resource - just what are SSG playing at?

Kim’s right. Print it out and stick it on your wall with your other medals Dave.

Kim’s right. Dave has earned a badge of honor for this. Can we claim him as an honorary Methoblogger?

Someone may have mentioned this already, but for a good recap of all Dave’s SPCK posts, Matt Wardman has compiled everything into a PDF

Even better than Matt’s pdf, Dave’s material has all been reposted at Cease and Desist, albeit without most of the comments… though some of those are being reinstated too now!

May I encourage all those with an interest in this story to read and consider signing the petition to rescue Durham Cathedral Bookshop from the Brewers, please?

Thanks to those who already have done!
