Hymn of the day

by Richard on September 28, 2008

Captain of Israel’s host, and guide
Of all who seek the land above,
Beneath thy shadow we abide,
The cloud of thy protecting love;
Our strength, thy grace; our rule, thy word;
Our end, the glory of the Lord.

By thine unerring Spirit led,
We shall not in the desert stray;
We shall not full direction need,
Nor miss our providential way;
As far from danger as from fear,
While love, almighty love, is near.

Charles Wesley

I’ve just caught the tail end of BBC radio 4’s, Dessert Island Discs and was wondering on reading your blog that in addition to the a hymn of the day, whether it would be interesting to start a debate on the notion of Dessert Island Hymns?

I feel like I’ve just entered the Twilight Zone! This very morning in church, I introduced one of the hymns as being at the top of my ‘Desert Island Hymns’ list. Spooky, or what?!

(For the record, it was Wesley’s Let earth and heaven agree)

Lovely misspelling/typo, Paul. On your island “How sweet the name of Jesus sounds” would be a must! :)

And what do you mean “just entered”, Richard? ;)
