Blessing of the Bikes

by Richard on June 2, 2009

Here’s a service which I confidently predict Dave Warnock will soon be introducing to British Methodism. And here’s a liturgy for it. Who’s for starting a petition to get it included in the next edition of the Worship Book?

Mind you, it could do with a bit of inclusive language. I mean to say, what about trikes? And unicyles.

Let’s have an end to wheelism.

My main concern is that it seems they are suggesting this as an annual service, obviously it should be weekly.

As for tricycles and unicycles if you have one of each then you average out as a bike so are already covered.

If you want to be inclusive, a recumbent might pass, but unicycles and trikes–that’s going too far.

Have you never heard of diversity, Mark?

The liturgy is absolutely brilliant. The opening reading from Ezekiel about the wheels is a stunning gambit of textual misappropriation. Only someone on a large dose of valium could say the prayers with a straight face. And the blessing about the road rising up to meet you surely constitutes a cyclist’s curse. Is rubber burned instead of incense? Is there a preliminary service for the blessing of tattoos and leather jackets? Can we soon expect The Cyclist’s Bible? I can’t stop laughing …
