Good stuff from Olive

by Richard on July 13, 2009

Olive is on a bit of a roll at the minute. First, she reminds me that I haven’t welcomed the election of our new President and Vice-President for next year. That was remiss of me.

Second, she points to a report in the Telegraph that Only 10% of Britons know the Bible. Olive is right - there is a lot to do. The church has an enormous task. My daughter, aged 12, came home from school the other day saying that in a ’straw poll’ she was the the only one in her class of 30 who said they believed in God.

Mind you, if the task before us is big, the God we worship is bigger.

If we remembered that, we might be a bit less prone to being the tired-but-hungry workaholic church that Olive talks about in the third of her posts to catch my eye today.

Revd David Wilkinson, from St John’s College, Durham, the survey’s sponsors, said these levels of ignorance meant most people are unable to appreciate the ‘depths’ of many pieces of music, Shakespeare’s plays or many works of art.

As someone who read English and studied art, I am sympathetic with David’s observation. But you’d think he might at least have added, “Oh, by the way, it also means that when many people say they’re ‘Christian’, they don’t know what the hell they’re talking about.” :)

There’s no pleasing some people…

Yeah, I know, I’m a right pain in the ass (or “arse”). But that too is part of my charm. ;)

Btw, I may not leave comments there, Olive, but you’ve got one fine blog.

Amen Kim.

On all counts.

Coming home from a Church Council meeting, these comments were a wonderful surprise and encouragement, especially coming from both Kim and Richard! I just wish I had more time to devote to blogging. I thought that after we get our certificates for Disciple 4 on Sunday I would have more time but i landed myself another job when I met friends at Conference - and there’s a lot more Media Publicity for our Centenary year for me to do when my church wakes up after the summer recess.
