Let the fire fall

On a theme related to my last post, Alan Bevere has a video report of a Bible-burning church in North Carolina. A little googling provided me with the church’s own invitation to this hallowe’en festival of fire

Halloween Book Burning

Burning Perversions of God’s Word

October 31, 2009

7:00 PM - Till

Great Preaching and Singing

Come to our Halloween book burning. We are burning Satan’s bibles like the NIV, RSV, NKJV, TLB, NASB, NEV, NRSV, ASV, NWT, Good News for Modern Man, The Evidence Bible, The Message Bible, The Green Bible, ect. These are
perversions of God’s Word the King James Bible.

We will also be burning Satan’s music such as country , rap , rock , pop, heavy metal, western, soft and easy, southern gospel , contempory Christian , jazz, soul, oldies but goldies, etc.

We will also be burning Satan’s popular books written by heretics like Westcott & Hort , Bruce Metzger, Billy Graham , Rick Warren , Bill Hybels , John McArthur, James Dobson, Charles Swindoll , John Piper, Chuck Colson, Tony Evans, Oral Roberts, Jimmy Swagart, Mark Driskol, Franklin Graham , Bill Bright, Tim Lahaye, Paula White, T.D. Jakes, Benny Hinn , Joyce Myers, Brian McLaren, Robert Schuller, Mother Teresa , The Pope , Rob Bell, Erwin McManus, Donald Miller, Shane Claiborne, Brennan Manning, William Young, etc.

We are not burning Bibles written in other languages that are based on the TR. We are not burning the Wycliffe, Tyndale, Geneva or other translations that are based on the TR.

We will be serving Bar-b-Que Chicken, fried chicken, and all the sides.

Makes you weep. It’s worth noting that these loonies are a tiny minority - the church has 14 members according to the video - but even so, I can’t help thinking that the worst advert for the Christian gospel are Christians themselves.

They did not spell Joyce Meyer’s name correctly either. Probably a minor fault compared to all the others, but if you are going to target the agents of Satan, you should at least get the names right.

And what is the ‘NEV’? I’m guessing they meant the NEB, right?

Still… they’ve got BBQ chicken…

Yeah, I wondered if they were going to BBQ the chicken over the fire from the books. I have no idea why that was the first thought I had when I heard that.

Makes you wonder if even these people are Christians in the first place? So the “Christian’s themselves” comment might not apply.

not sure who ‘mark driskol’ is either! I think these might be the same crazies who featured on a Louis Theroux show a couple of years ago. Its just terrible….

I mean, I can sorta see the Tim LaHaye comment. : )

D’you think they’d burn the Greek NT as well - Codex Sinaiticus? Codex Alexandrinus? p72?

This is nothing less than idolatry. It would be funny if it wasn’t so tragic. Screwtape was right.

Well, any NT texts discovered after the King James Version was translated clearly has to go! In fact, I reckon that Satan and his minions planted these as a trap to lure faithful Christians away from the truth. I mean, if the King James Version was good enough for Jesus, it’s good enough for me! Can I get a witness? Amen!?

Looks like a pretty good list to me. But recycling would be more eco-friendly.

Given that the King James Version was entirely translated by Anglicans, perhaps the Episcopal Church can look forward to fourteen new converts in the foreseeable future?

By the way, I’ll bet their editions of the KJV don’t include the Apocrypha as the original 1611 edition did!

i play music with a songwriter/worship leader (Charlie Hall) who was recommended to the homeschool association of the pastor’s daughter this month, and apparently, we are getting a handwritten letter from her about our appearance (as heathens with beards). I am sure they also take umbrage with our describing Jesus in Eucharistic terms, and that we have a song called “Hookers and Robbers,” the chorus of which says, “come as you are..” Universalism if i ever heard it. Just thought i would share an interesting connection…

Will that letter be written in capital letters with green or red biro, I wonder?!

Wycliff translated the Vulgate into english….

I love how Westcott and Hort lead the list of names.

Don’t forget Tischendorf!

Heathens with beards? So what’s wrong with beards? Moses had one (I’ve seen the movie…) and so did Jesus (ditto…). That’s not why I grew one. I just appreciate the extra 10 minutes in bed in the morning…

Oh, all right - now it’s grey it makes me look distinguished. (Or old. Or something…)

i like that its ‘7 pm til…’
makes one wonder how long an event like this lasts w/ all these authors, singers and translations to burn plus the aforementioned bbq chicken (with sides mind you) PLUS some really terrific preaching (undoubtedly on god’s love) and singing

i might suggest that perhaps 6 isn’t a more appropriate starting time..

After all the authors and music they listed, it makes you wonder which authors and recording artists they’re actually okay with. I’m guessing if they ever quote a non King James version of Scripture then they’re immediately banned. I also find it interesting that the name of Jesus is not mentioned at any point. Some of us can become so consumed at shooting at each other that we lose sight of the things that are most important, namely the cross and the gospel.
