Staying safe online

Lifehacker offers The Complete Guide to Avoiding Online Scams (for Your Less Savvy Friends and Relatives). There’s some good advice — here are the highlights

  • Never, Ever Click a Link to Your Bank or Financial Institution From an Email
And always look for the little lock icon on any web page claiming to be your bank’s
  • Never Give Out Your Email Password
You probably think you’d never do this, but there are lots of Web 2.0 sites that ask for this information so they can invite your friends from your contact list. Take care.
  • Use Strong Passwords (and Secret Questions)
And don’t use the same password for every site
  • Ignore Web Site Popups Saying You Have a Virus
I’ve almost been caught out by this one. Never again.

I’ve cherry-picked what I think are the best bits, but the whole article is worth reading.
