A snatched moment…

Snatched, because the Christmas cards aren’t finished. I shouldn’t be blogging at a time like this.

I couldn’t not comment on the successful campaign to get Rage Against the Machine to the Christmas No 1 spot, though. This is being heralded as a success for “people against” the previously unstoppable media machine of Simon Cowell’s X Factor.

What rot. RATM are just as much a product as sweet Joe McElderry. What the campaign has done is ensure that Sony BMG are laughing all the way to the bank.

“Rage against the machine” - which tells people to refuse do what they’re told to do - and the Facebook adolescentia - bleated! Because Facebook is itself a cog in the machine, the “protest” was not even a glitch in the system, it’s rather precisely the way the system works, the way it morphs and perpetuates itself. There are, for sure, ideological battles to be fought. This, however, wasn’t even a storm in a teacup.
