Ah, yes, the cult of “niceness”, endemic in so many of our churches, with which - Angela is right - ministers often collude. We mistake niceness for kindness. Niceness is perfunctory and cheap, kindness focussed, forthright, and costly. Niceness for a quiet life, but a phoney and hypocritical life. Kindness, however can get you into trouble. Kindness, in fact, can get you killed. Jesus wasn’t nice, Jesus was kind.
I try to be nice - not always easy with some people. I hope I’ve shown kindness - but probably not nearly enough. Kim is spot on - I have at times just wanted a quiet life.
