Band of Bloggers

by Richard on May 13, 2004

A little while ago I mentioned the notion of getting together a virtual “band of bloggers”. I’ve been giving it some more thought, and now I’m trying to “get it together”. If you’re interested in joining in, please confirm by leaving a comment below.

The web-thingy is quite ready, but if you’re as technical as me (!) you’ll want some time to prepare. I’m suggesting we do “Amazing grace” as a first try because: a. It’s easy, and b. everyone will know it. Key of G, 100 bpm or thereabouts I think. (If anyone thinks I’ve got that wrong, please say so!) If you want to join in, you’ll need to find a way of recording your chosen instrument as an .mp3 or .wav file. Don’t go mad with the quality settings. Quick and dirty, cheap and cheerful for this first go I think. If you record one verse of melody and maybe another verse of harmony (as seperate files I should say), you’ll be ready for when the upload thingy is sorted out. All participants will be able to access the uploaded files if you want to have a go at mixing them together. I’ll be using Audacity for this, and I’ll make my effort available here.

So what do you reckon? Can we make this work?

Sounds good to me. I’ve never tried to record my guitar before, but it shouldn’t be too difficult.

Of course, there are so many different ways to do “Amazing Grace,” even with the same time and key signiature…do we do it “straight”, or “swingy,” or…?

Let’s “play it by ear”!

Give me some time to sort out how to do it, because I’m working full time these days, but I’d still like to participate as well.

You’d be welcome Godfrey!
No rush, Swan.

Thanks, Richard!

Er, this is probably a silly question, but do you tune to A=440 in England?

Is that a subtle way of telling me I was playing “Amazing Grace” out-of-tune, Godfrey? ;) Don’t you know the phrase “close enough for jazz”? :-)

But, yes, I think A=440.

Don’t worry, I’m used to retuning to meet various fixed-pitch instruments. I was just wondering if there was a specific number I should be shooting for. :-)
