Sometimes all you can do is weep

by Richard on December 26, 2004

SouthEast Asia earthquake mapEven as Christmas is celebrated a terrible tragedy strikes the world as thousands die in south east asia from the effects of an undersea earthquake. The BBC is reporting 6000 dead. 2 hours ago the figure was 4000. It’s hard to avoid bringing to mind the words of this morning’s lectionary

“A voice was heard in Ramah,
wailing and loud lamentation,
Rachel weeping for her children;
she refused to be consoled,
because they were no more.”

I pray that we don’t turn our backs on those weeping tonight.

Weeping helps nobody. Now is the time for prayer and help!
We are the wealthy 20% of the world and they are part of the
80% remaining with nought. The time has come for us in the
North/West to help our fellow human beings in the South/East.

The conclusion of Job says it all. His friends gather round
and help him and weep with him and then God blessed Job and
his friends. Let’s help our fellow human beings.
